Versatility...

Koryukan (Home of the School of Ancient Ways), our system of martial arts practice, brings together a varied number of defense and fighting disciplines which include those from the Japanese arts, the Chinese arts, the Korean arts and the Filipino arts.

Ground techniques, throws, trapping and joint locks (jujutsu) as well as forms (katas) and weapons (kobudo) are incorporated in Koryukan from the Japanese arts. Energy work (qigong) and certain animal styles are featured from the Chinese arts. From the Korean arts, Koryukan has integrated some the earliest defense forms that hone skills for re-directing, turning and spinning, and striking. And the inclusion of the Kali/Eskrima style of the Filipino arts introduces a comprehensive edged-weapon defense as well as stick-fighting techniques to our system.

We have programs for men, women, and children. We also give exceptional self defense training to women and teens interested in learning and practicing these principles and techniques, but not interested in training the martial arts as a whole.

Facilitating a Student's Development...

When a student is ready to learn, he opens his heart to the master teacher much in the same way as a flower opens to its enviroment at the height of its maturity.  He wants to know more, and may express this by asking questions, by requesting he be taught something in particular, or by simply offering to be of assistance in some fashion or other. 

Whatever his means of expression, what has in essence occurred is that he has arrived at the recognition that there is something more to know.  He is thus mentally and emotionally available to continue on his path of development, and is saying so.

Until such time that the flower has opened, however—try as he may or talented as he may be—the teacher will not be able to provoke a higher learning.  A student will only ever garner what he is prepared to receive and not an iota more.  Enlightenment cannot be forced if only because it fails to be enlightening.

Therefore, it goes without saying that a teacher—even a master teacher—cannot impart knowledge when it is not ready to be received.  No matter how brilliant, no matter how informative, no matter how enlightening, it will go by the wayside.  In order for the student to successfully bridge the gap between the known and what is yet to be known, the stage must be effectively set.  This is not my rule.  It is a natural law of growth and evolution.

Self-Defense Instruction

Exclusively for women, young women and teen girls.

A woman’s personal safety involves more than knowing a few defense techniques.  It requires training that infuses keen awareness practices and reliable prevention skills that include evasive action. 

Trained by some of the best law enforcement professionals in the field, Myrna Boyer, Master Instructor, has developed an incomparable women’s empowerment curriculum for teaching personal safety and self defense to women and teens.  Far from following the usual pattern of technique-heavy training, this is a three-fold program that encompasses:

• Course Room Training in Theory

  Color codes of awareness, intuition & sensitivity, mindset, presence, personal boundaries, verbal tone, safety precautions, pre-incident indicators, survival signals, soft focus practices, optimal breathing, the expert use of peripheral vision, stress response reactions, striking areas of the body and the levels of injury inherent to each, evasive actions, and the legalities of self defense.

• Practical Defense Techniques

Creating forward pressure, strikes, kicks, escapes for a varied number of holds including rear and frontal choke holds, grabs and ground holds, grabs or chokes; knife and firearm defense; principles for engaging and/or disengaging and creating a reactionary gap; defensive re-directs; and use of the Four C’s (Cover, Coil, Clear, Contact) to recover from a surprise assault.

• Scenario-Based, Reality-Defense Training

An extensive use of scenarios that test the student’s ability to make rational decisions under stressful circumstances based on the presence or absence of a threat. The student must be able to determine if a threat is present, and when it is, must be able to either take appropriate evasive action or mount an effective defense.
